A view of Lainville

 

Lainville-en-Vexin is a village not far from Paris,  I think this is a charming way to present a view of the village.  If you look closely at the carriage, you'll see a bicycle hidden behind.  I like to think that the photographer perhaps stopped the carriage and asked if they would pose for a photograph,  

Bessé-les-Echelles

I think that this postcard is the photographer’s idea of a joke. There is no such place as Bessé-les-Echelles (Echelle = ladder), the village is called Bessé-sur-Braye. Each house has a ladder leading to the upper window. I wonder why. Were the houses built without stairs to the upper floor? I looked around on Google earth and although I found some houses of similar architecture; I didn’t find this particular row.

Another little village somewhere in France where the boys play “saute mouton” like all children do.

Saute mouton = leap sheep better known as leap frog in English.

Village Life

I couldn’t find a modern day picture online of the centre of this village. The photograph would have been taken before WW1. It was posted in 1915. As the postcard was sent from the Champagne Ardennes region at that epoch. More than likely by a soldier sending a postcard home to his family.

Lucy-le-Bois

A corner of the middle ages. This is another little village I’d like to visit some time. The card was sent in 1925. I haven’t been able to find a recent picture of this street, I hope that it is still there.
