Do you remember this?

I was born 8 years after the Kon Tiki Expedition, but during my school days we were captivated by the story of Thor Hayerdahl and his crew on their voyage across the pacific ocean.

This is what is known as a semi-modern postcard. Often in black and white and sometimes in colour, they are gaining in popularity as people remember how things used to be when they were young through the postcards.

At this very moment there is a modern expedition, An-Tiki,  led by an 84 year old to raise money for Water Aid. They set off on January 30th and are crossing the Atlantic ocean. There is an An-Tiki blog and website.

I think doing something like this is a dream come true.
It's better than flying because you will never run out of gas. lol
And something about being able to jump over board for a swim and maybe getting food from the sea.
Its an adventure.

It's hard to imagine how anyone could have been brave enough back at the time of the original lost in time voyages to the New World. Of course they had no concept of just how far they would have to go, so I guess it wasn't all bravery. But even Columbus had a distorted view of just how big the Atlantic was.

Not to mention how fragile these reed boats seem by modern standards. I enjoyed seeing this postcard and bringing back memories of learning about the Kon-Tiki!

PS. I DID finally see this blog in rotation on ExposeYourBlog!

That is a very cool post card. I was born well after the expedition, but the name "Kon Tiki" was a household word that I recognized.
