Marié de L'Isle

I’ve mentioned the French photographer Henri Manuel a couple of times here. Today I came across this lovely portrait of the French mezzo soprano Célestine Galli-Marié known as Marié de l’Isle, it was taken by him. I haven’t managed to find out much about her at all. She was born in 1840, married a sculptor called Galli and died in 1905.

Tomorrow we’re off to an auction in another town. I wonder what treasures we’ll find.

You know, Anji...I'm starting to think I should take up collecting postcards myself! You find the most wonderful and interesting faces and stories! Hope the auction is fruitful!

It is a lovely picture. It is nice with this touch of "flou". And I think that in color it would not have been so beautiful.

Whenever I look at an beautiful photograph of someone who is long gone, it fills me with a wistfullness that I can't fully rationalise, but which I enjoy. Like the memories of a distant summer.

Isobel: I'm sure that you would find a type of card that you would like to collect, there are so many different postcards

Peter: Henri Manuel was a true artist.

Indavao: Thanks for your visit

Henry: You have expressed your thoughts beautifully. A moment in time captured forever.

Tagskie: Hello again!

That's really a beautiful picture.
We pay for all of these expensive cameras and we still can't create anything like the old sepia works of art.

That is a beautiful portrait of Célestine Galli. There's a nice picture of her at age 26 on Wiki also but it's not nearly as nice as your postcard.

T: You would be amazed at how clear and in focus some of the images are. I recently managed to read a cinema poster in order to date a card.

Wine: Sorry I didn't find more information.

Utenzi: yes, I think my card is better too!
