The black cat

We went to another auction last week and bought some new stock which we are really pleased with. I’m already starting to pick up the story of another family who moved around France because the man of the house was a bank manager.

I was charmed by this handmade card. I imagine that the little girl was staying with her grandparents when she received this card from her favourite Uncle! The stamp is real, but he’s painted a false postmark over it.

What a beautiful card! Personally I love cats. I pet cats I don't know, I collect things with cats on it (cups, souvernirs, postcards, books, matchboxes etc. etc.) The first word I learn in a new language is the word for cat. I think I know "cat" in 11 languages by now. Please post more cat postcards! Miao!

I really like this one. I love cats also. Well done. I wonder why he painted a false postmark? Could they do that back then?

Willow: I was recently surprised to find some really old postcards of cats, so it's not just bloggers who like to show their cats off.

Titania: I think that the postcard would have travelled in an envelope, it probably wouldn't have been allowed on its own as it is a little smaller than a real postcard. The stamp is of a value smaller than the postage at the time. I think he did it just to amuse his neice.

At the auction there was another lot of postcards with several hand painted cards, perhaps by the same artist. It went too high for our budget...

Soulmerlin: I wonder if you read my posts about Henri the soldier. I was so relieved when I discovered he had survived the first world war.

Rob gets cross with me because I spend too much time reading and dreaming about the backs of the postcards.
