Prison

On the Ile de Ré, which is just across the bridge from here, there was a notorious prison. Do you remember the 1973 film Papillon with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman? In the film ‘Papillon’ was deported from the Ile de Ré. This card shows prisoners arriving around 1907, A little earlier than the story took place. There is still a prison on the Ile de Ré today.

Unfortunately, although interesting, the postcard is in a very poor state. The stamp has been torn from the front of the card and there are lots of creases.

I remember very well the movie "Papillon". But I liked the book better. But then it is often like this: Sometimes a book is better, sometimes a film.

I do remember that movie. It is still a very interesting postcard though it has some wear and tear. :o)

Peter: Is it best to read the book first, or pehaps to see the film? A great question...

Titania: I looked closely at the faces of the prisoners to see if they looked especially evil, but they just look like ordinary men. I wonder who they were and what they are supposed to have done?
